car battery or alternator issue

Signs of a Bad Alternator or Battery?

Anyone who has ever owned a car will have had a car battery issue at least once in their lifetime as a car owner. And its frustrating if you don’t know whether it’s the battery or the alternator. Today I will share with you my experience with both and how to deal with the issue of identifying which one is the faulty one. Battery will be the cheaper fix and alternator will be the expensive one. Knowing which one is faulty would save you lots of money.

I have been in the used car business for over 10 years now and I would like to educate my followers on this issue. But first we need to understand the functions of both and then we can do a simple test to determine which one is faulty, and this is from firsthand experience and its 100 applicable to all cars.

So, what does a battery have to do with the alternator?

An auto battery supplies a big electric charge that travels through the starting system and turns some gears to start the car. Once the car is running, the alternator sends current back to recharge the battery as you drive. It supplies power for your car’s electronics when you’re underway and makes sure the right amount of charge goes back to the battery. So in short, the battery starts the car, but then the alternator does the rest of the job as well as keeping the bather charged.

How to tell which one is faulty?

If the car does not start or just cranks but does not start, you will need to get a jump start. Once you have jump started the car, you will need to open the hood of the car and do a simple test with your hands and a wrench or a tool to unscrew the bolts from one of the batter cables. I would suggest unscrewing the BLACK cables from the battery while the car is still RUNNING. Remove the black cable from the battery and if the car is still running then that only means one thing. You need to get a new battery. But if you removed the black cable and the car stops then it means your alternator needs to be changed.

This is the easiest way to tell before you take it to the garage and they tell you something else and end up paying a lot for something that need not to be changed at all, some people even had their engines replaced due to the fact that they did not know what was wrong and were scammed out by dishonest garages. So, follow this simple step to ensure its either the battery or the alternator. Best of luck.
